Early Kirby slides (G3 and early G4) did not have the spring so Kirby vacuum was more likely to "get stuck" in gear. The spring brings the slide to the center when handle is released thus disengaging the tech drive and putting Kirby in "neutral".
If you can see that surface where bearing rollers touch the slide damaged - you have to replace it. If this is the case we would recommend replacing both bearings and slide guides too. Use a little bit of lithium grease to lubricate the bearings.
